Crafting a New European Social Contract Together

EXPRESS2 is a project that addresses from a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and cross-sectional perspective, the growing demand for a new, more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable social contract in the EU. To achieve this, we will work to create a more appealing and legitimate EU social contract draft that will be submitted to inhabitants, Member States and EU institutions that will have the possibility to participate and decide upon the conditions, rights, and obligations to be binding.

The project focuses on identifying and analysing several disruptive elements of the social contract, such as insecurity, populism, climate change, mistrust in institutions, gender discrimination, digitalisation and pandemics. In the first workshop, we will address issues of democracy (including mistrust in institutions, populism and gender equality), climate change and digitalisation. Each issue will be discussed first in plenary conversation involving academic and civil society partners of the Express2 project, EU civil society and institutional stakeholders and then further analysed in the short workshop session involving all participants.

To engage in conversation with the relevant Civil society Organisations (CSOs) and EU policymakers and gather their feedback on the draft European Social Contract early on, the European Movement International (EMI) is organising this first kick-off workshop. The workshop will be held in person in Brussels on 10th March 2025 from 9.00 to 17.00 CET.
